Kenneth Cheng began horse riding at the age of 4.
He learned at the Lo Wu Saddle equestrian club in Sheung Shui, before joining the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
At the age of 17, he competed in his first Asian Games. Later, under the guidance of Ireland's 2002 World Champion Dermott Lennon, the young Chinese rider took part in the World Cup series of the Asian League, organized in Malaysia in 2006.
Kenneth Cheng represented Hong Kong at the Asian Games in 2006. He was the youngest rider on the Hong Kong team at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
